About the Film:

Resilience reveals one of the most important public health findings of a generation—how childhood trauma can shape lifelong health and behavior. The film follows pioneering physicians, educators, and community leaders who are implementing innovative solutions to prevent and heal the effects of Toxic Stress.
When the original research was first introduced, it was controversial to even consider asking patients about sensitive childhood experiences. The landmark ACE Study asked profound questions such as, "Were you sexually abused as a child? Did you have a parent who was an alcoholic?" The answers provided a startling revelation: childhood trauma was conclusively linked to increased risks of heart disease, diabetes, addiction, and depression. The film explores how experts are now using cutting-edge science to address and mitigate these risks.
Featuring the work of Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, a pediatrician pioneering early interventions for children at risk, and communities across the country implementing trauma-informed practices, Resilience demonstrates that while the effects of childhood adversity are serious, they are also preventable. From schools teaching emotional resilience techniques to healthcare providers recognizing the symptoms of Toxic Stress, the documentary showcases real-world applications of this groundbreaking research.
