The Drum’s Call: West African Folklore and Music
Join us for an interactive afternoon as we dive into West African folklore through music, drumming, and song. In The Drum’s Call: West African Folklore and Music, we’ll explore Udara Mu Cha, the story of a young girl who finds solace and sustenance from a mythical tree when neglected by her caregivers.
Attendees will have the opportunity to choose between two interactive options. In the vocal melody portion, Chiemerie Obianom, a vocalist with roots in Nigerian music, will teach the melodic and narrative techniques that bring the story’s message to life through song. Meanwhile, Victoria Boateng, an accomplished djembe teacher and autism advocate, will lead the drumming rhythm group, teaching rhythmic patterns that embody the spirit and emotion of the tale.
The event will culminate in a mini-performance, where participants will come together to share what they've learned, creating a moment of unity and celebration. This family-friendly event welcomes all ages and skill levels—no previous experience is required. Join us for an afternoon of music, culture, and community!
Event Instructors:
Chiemerie Obianom
Chiemerie Obianom, originally from Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria, is a talented vocalist and musician whose musical journey began in his parish choir. Recognized for his vocal abilities, he went on to earn a spot in the prestigious Musical Society of Nigeria’s diploma program, sponsored by the MTN Foundation, where he trained under the mentorship of Sir Emeka Nwokedi. Chiemerie graduated with honors, winning multiple competitions and gaining recognition for his skill and passion. Now studying at Roosevelt University, he shares his expertise through vocal lessons and community music programs, bringing the rich heritage of West African music to diverse audiences.
Victoria Boateng
Victoria Boateng found her voice through the djembe after being diagnosed with autism at a young age and not speaking until the age of seven. A graduate of Western Illinois University, Victoria has since studied West African drumming with master drummers Bolokoda Conde and Michael Taylor. Currently, she teaches drumming at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts and the Old Town School of Folk Music, serves as an apprentice performer in the all-female Ayodele Drum and Dance company, and is a drum facilitator with Sista Afya, an organization promoting mental health awareness for Black women. Victoria is an advocate for autism awareness and disability representation, using her talent and passion for drumming to inspire and educate.
