Join us at 1 pm on the first Saturday of the month at Blue Barn Farm & Sanctuary for a reading session with our barn bunnies! Children can experience the joy of reading while surrounded by our bunny residents! This unique opportunity is designed for children to get to know animals on a personal level, to foster a love of reading and compassion.
Our session will start with a story read together, followed by an introduction to our rabbits. Children will then get to pick a story (they can bring their own or choose from our library) and a rabbit they would like to read to. The remainder of the hour will be spent reading stories to our rabbits.
This session is geared toward readers who wish to spend their time with a bunny and a book. If reading is not of interest to your child, no problem- just contact us to schedule a private tour to meet and greet our animal residents without the stories!
Event Highlights
Reading Time: Our founder will be here to read age appropriate stories to our guests and pose questions to encourage empathy and critical thinking (and have fun, too!!). The remainder of the time will be spent building our reading muscles and enjoying some good books in great company!
Space: We will meet outside our small barn and go in together to read in the center of our barn- there will be a large blanket on the floor and chairs are available upon request.
Bunny Interaction: Children will have the opportunity to greet our rescue rabbits, encouraging empathy and connection with animals. We will also offer treats to encourage engagement and hopefully there will be some pets involved. We always follow their lead- snacks are a sure thing- pets are a bonus! Please remember that some of our buns had a pretty scary life before they arrived. All things considered, they are pretty social but some take time to warm up! This is a great opportunity to teach patience, understanding and empathy. Role modeling is strongly encouraged to create a positive experience for all!
Important Information for Parents
Age Requirement: The event is geared toward young readers- typically 5 and above. You know your child best- pick the session that feels right for your kiddo! (We offer an adult led story session for younger kiddos or for those who enjoy to listen more than reading itself).
Supervision: Parents or guardians must remain on-site during the event and we encourage them to be near their child and participate as well.
Allergies: If your child has allergies to animals, hay or dust, please consider this before signing up.
Attire: Comfortable clothing is recommended. Please ensure your child wears closed-toe shoes for safety and bring layers. We may encounter some rain and the barn can get a little chilly.
Booking: Pre-registration is required. Spaces are limited to ensure each child has ample time with the bunnies. Please buy one ticket per family.
Signup: To participate we ask you to sign up online. Participation is free, but you are welcome to leave a donation.
