This Homelessness Awareness Week, we invite you to join us at the Breaking Barriers Business Breakfast, a crucial event aimed at engaging the Mandurah and Peel business community to address homelessness. Together, we can create lasting change and ensure that everyone in our community has a safe place to call home.
Why it Matters:
On any given night, 122,494 people in Australia are experiencing homelessness (ABS Census 2021).
One in seven people experiencing homelessness are children under 12 (ABS Census 2021).
23% of people experiencing homelessness are children and young people between 12 and 24 (ABS Census 2021).
One in five people experiencing homelessness are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (ABS Census 2021).
Challenges Facing Homelessness Services:
Overwhelmed Services: In 2022-23, 273,600 people were assisted by homelessness services (AIHW, Specialist Homelessness Services Annual Report 2022-23).
Unmet Need: A further 108,000 people sought help but were unable to be assisted due to shortages of staff, accommodation, or other services (AIHW 2023).
Daily Struggles: That’s 295 people turned away each day due to overstretched services.
Impact on Women and Children: 80% of those turned away were women and children, often fleeing domestic and family violence.
What to Expect:
Interactive Displays: Experience different forms of homelessness to deepen understanding.
Personal Stories: Hear firsthand from individuals with lived experiences of homelessness.
Exhibition Booths: Engage with local organisations working to combat homelessness.
