Goal
My mother, a young woman who immigrated from Germany, became a naturalized citizen in 1955. I could never have imagined that almost 60 years later, I would have the opportunity to prepare people for naturalization - people who have made the United States their new home just as my mother did so many years ago. Some have immigrated, some have fled their country for their own safety. Many are like this young woman, recently highlighted on KSL news: https://www.ksl.com/article/50434510/rolling-the-dice-for-citizenship-refugees-join-slc-english-program-for-citizenship-application I am more than proud to be a part of the English Skills Learning Center Citizenship Program.
The ESLC has been providing free literacy and civics tutoring and small group classes across Salt Lake County for 34 years. With our focus on two-way mutual integration, our classes are about much more than learning English. We aim to break language and cultural barriers in order to create a community where ALL voices are celebrated. In the Citizenship Program, we provide history, government, and civics education so that participants in our classes can use their voices to participate in our democracy with full understanding of the rights as well as responsibilities of citizenship.
September is also Adult Education and Family Literacy Month, so I am inviting YOU to join us in offering free and accessible adult education classes. There are many ways to help. Become a volunteer. Spread the word. Or donate to our September fundraiser.
P.S. Our team is having a friendly competition (with incentives) to see who can raise the most money between September 1st-September 30th. If you have loved working with or learning from one of our team members, reach out to them to donate directly on their campaign page!
