Emergency support for Squash Dreamers

We have created this fund for those who would like to provide extra support to Squash Dreamers during the heightened regional instability.

The ongoing escalating violence between the US and Israel and Iran has impacted multiple countries across our region, and while at a lower risk, Jordan has not been unaffected.

Since Saturday, Jordan has had regular air raid warnings and subsequent strikes. These have focused on US bases in the country, and the majority have been intercepted, causing missile debris to drop on more populated areas. While the air raids are alarming and we are hearing the effects of the interceptions, none of the Squash Dreamers’ families or staff live in areas that are currently at risk of targeting. As such, we have been continuing our work as normal, with increased caution.

The situation is scary, particularly for children who have previously fled war zones. We are placing increased focus on wellbeing programming, and are ensuring every child gets a 1-1 wellness check in with a member of staff. Unfortunately, these events are a reminder of how important our work is. The community needs more support than ever, and we are constantly adapting to ensure we are meeting their needs.

The US has today told its citizens to evacuate Jordan and other countries at risk, due to a threat to the US embassy and other locations. This means many of our volunteers, and our Fulbright teacher will be leaving. However, all other staff, including myself and head of operations Emma, are committed to staying in country to run programming for as long as it is safe and viable.

We are grateful for the continued support from our board and donors, and will endeavour to keep you informed as things develop. This is a fluid situation, and we are keeping ourselves informed, as well as following Jordanian government advice. Should things change dramatically we will of course adapt accordingly, but for now, we are safe and dedicated to supporting our community.
