“Please don’t leave me here…..I don’t want to die.”
Dear friends
My heart broke last week when I heard one of our girls utter these words. A single mum, with a 1 year old son and no family to support her, she considers The Liberty Project her family and home. As I have journeyed with Lucia* for the past one and half years, she has come to know and follow Jesus and become family to me as well.
Friends, I need your help. The situation in Pemba has reached desperation point and we have to leave. I don’t know how to adequately communicate just how serious this situation is; it really is becoming a situation of life and death.
Insurgents are closing in on Pemba as they prepare to try and occupy the city as the capitol city of Cabo Delgado. It is believed a mass attack will occur within the next six months. Security consultants have advised The Liberty Project urgently to leave; it is no longer safe for us to stay in Pemba.
When I told my staff team of the situation, they immediately without any hesitation said they would move to continue our work and to remain safe. When we told the girls we are working with we had to leave, they pleaded to come too. “Please don’t leave us here!” Lucia* has asked we also take her younger orphaned sister and her 2 year old son with us too.
People are fleeing Pemba, and our team do not want to be there when the insurgents strike. 19 Liberty Project beneficiaries, staff and family members (including Lucia* and her son) have asked to leave with us, and I don’t want to leave any of them behind. Please, will you help get them and our ministry belongings to safety?
God has already connected us with a ministry in Nacala City (six hours drive away) who are helping us look for land to immediately relocate to; and will also help us with the transition into a new area. However without your help, myself and my team cannot get there. This relocation needs to happen immediately in the coming weeks.
I urgently need to find:
US$6000 to get our Liberty 4x4 legally up to Pemba so we can transport everyone to safety.
US$7000 to provide emergency shelter, food and supplies for The Liberty Project team as we resettle.
Please can you partner with me in providing safety for our Liberty Project family? Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.
A press release with more information was sent last week. Click here to learn more about the unfolding civil insurgency - and the incredible way God has already prepared a place for us to relocate to.
I realise this is an additional ask, on top of your already generous support of our ministry. This move was not anticipated, but our Board of Directors feel strongly this is the Lord’s direction for us at this time. We cannot put lives at risk. Despite having to move, our mission will always be the same: to work with vulnerable women and have experienced abuse, exploitation and who are internally displaced and we look forward to being able to invite other displaced women from Cabo Delgado in Nacala into our programs to bring hope, freedom, true identity and empowerment to each one!
While I feel overwhelmed at the logistics of what lies ahead, I know that God has His hands on this. I will be in touch later this week to answer any questions you may have.
Thank you for your continued support. Please pray for us,
God Bless,
Laura and The Liberty Team
P.S. Please help us raise $13,000 to move The Liberty Project urgently to a safe location!
