Communities Under Water
Communities across eastern Syria are facing severe flooding after one of the heaviest rainy seasons in nearly 30 years caused water levels along the Euphrates River to surge.
Homes, schools, mosques, farmland, and a refugee camp have been inundated, forcing families to flee rising waters. In Deir Ezzor, an earthen bridge collapsed under the pressure of the floodwaters, while the Syrian navy was deployed to assist with evacuations.
Communities Under Water Lives Already Lost
The flooding has already claimed lives. Civil defense teams reported that three children drowned in the flooded Euphrates River, while rescue workers continue responding to emergencies across affected areas.
Families who have lost homes, livelihoods, and access to basic services now face an uncertain future.
The Health Emergency Has just Begun
Floods do not end when the water recedes.
Contaminated water increases the risk of cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne diseases. Injuries can quickly become infected. Standing water creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes, while damaged infrastructure limits access to healthcare.
Children, pregnant women, older adults, and people living with chronic illnesses are among those most at risk.
