Goal
Did you know that this year Utah placed at the 9th best state to live in? We have a beautiful state rich in colorful and adventurous landscapes, high rated education, and low cost living. Living beneath the shadows of the wonderful parts of our state is a big problem, domestic violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent in Utah that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience it, which exceeds the national average of 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men. This issue is so big in fact, that while Utah had a low rate of homicide, since the year 2000 at least 47% of the state's homicides, and 70% specifically of female homicides, have a connection to domestic violence. Domestic violence is a life threatening, community wide issue and beginning to make changes starts with each and every one of us.
South Valley Services, one of 13 domestic violence services providers covering 29 counties, serves domestic violence survivors within Salt Lake county. Over the past 21 years, SVS has served tens of thousands of survivors through life saving services like emergency shelter, food and clothing, case management, clinical therapy, housing services, and more. SVS is able to serve many survivors with the help of limited government funding and private grants, but most importantly, with the help of the community through physical and monetary donations. Unrestricted funding through donations allows SVS to not only help more survivors, but also to fill in gaps that other funding sources can't. Donated funds allow us to purchase needed items for survivors, to fix facility issues, train our staff, and expand our premises overtime in order to serve more survivors. Most importantly, donated funds allow us to empower survivors through the vital services we offer. Each appointment that a survivor has with a housing specialist, a case manager, or a therapist is getting them closer to independence and healing, and empowering them to end the cycle of violence in their life.
We invite you, as you spend time with your family, complete holiday shopping, enjoy delicious treats this year, to think about the domestic violence survivors being helped by SVS and how you can further our services through a donation. Each and every dollar donated helps to empower a survivor to live a life free of violence.
