Visions of Women, founded by Dorlisa Adams, began in 2014 as a student group at Lander University in Greenwood SC.
After learning about domestic violence and sexual assault while studying sociology and simultaneously volunteering with the local shelter, Ms. Adams was exposed to the high rates of families experiencing homelessness due to domestic violence and other abuses.
She decided to take action by developing a women’s group to provide a safe space for women to learn about, and to discuss healthy relationships, domestic violence, sexual assault, and their individual autonomy.
In just a short period, this group expanded to become a major activist group on campus-spearheading educational campaigns and outreach on domestic violence, sexual assault, and services available in the community for those experiencing unhealthy relationships.
VOW has since broadened their goal in the community off campus, by providing circle groups, mental health counseling services, teen healthy relationship talks, educational outreach, and launching donation drives to secure funds and in-kind donations for:
In 2018, VOW garnered its 501(c)(3) status and continues to serve on college campuses in South Carolina.
