Hi, I’m Richard and my main occupation in life is playing the clarinet. More specifically, I work with composers to bring their new music to life and coach clarinettists in preparing and performing musical works that are off the beaten path. For me it’s about giving composers and their music the best possible experience whilst furthering the art of clarinet playing.
I also make videos and write articles and charts about contemporary music. My videos include live performances and information about clarinet technique. In my articles and charts (see "Reference") I hope to share information not only about score fidelity, memorisation and contemporary techniques, but also provide the basis for students and professionals to extended the way they play the instrument and go beyond what they thought possible, whether it’s articulation, finger technique, microtonality or tonal exercises.
It’s not just about the B-flat clarinet, but all modern clarinets from the E-flat piccolo to the bass and contrabass clarinets, and the warm tones of the more under-utilised clarinet in A or the basset horn. Recently I have commissioned a new instrument: the clarinet d’amore. This basset instrument is pitched in G and is a revival of a long lost member of the clarinet family that I hope to bring to composers and audiences with time.
By supporting my work and giving a one-time, weekly or monthly donation, you will enable me to more regularly post videos and new reference content, as well as enjoying some of the listed perks above. Thank you for your ongoing support.
