Goal
Over 90% of people sentenced to prison will return to their original communities; this population is not separated from us, they are our neighbors. Once they are released from incarceration, they often find themselves lacking employment opportunities, housing, and support within their communities. These issues frequently lead to recidivism and reincarnation. Almost 75% of individuals will be rearrested only five years after being released. The use of successful reentry programs can decrease recidivism by 20%. Lake County, Indiana, in particular, has extremely high rates of incarceration, and recidivism rates are rising due to the lack of reentry programs and support. The Community Change Center provides the following reentry resources:
free bi-weekly community meals
community support groups
reentry book club in Westville Correctional Facility
mentorship matching
transitional housing
adult education classes.
However, the organization needs funding to continue services, which is where this project and you come in.
