In early March we were living our near normal lives, and today it's a completely different world. We have new phrases; COVID-19, social distancing, sheltering-in place, flattening the curve and more. While many of us are being sent home to work, others are being laid off their low wage jobs, and for some of us we can't run fast enough. At the food shelf we expect the need for our services to grow rapidly, doubling or even tripling. We will most likely be expanding our services to twice monthly instead of once a month, doing more home deliveries, and emergency food distributions.
In April we had 337 households equaling 682 people come to us with for food. Many of these people were recently laid off of their jobs, these numbers included 135 children and 129 seniors 65 and over. Now in May we will offering food distribution twice instead of our normal monthly. We have been using a truck to get the food closer to those sheltering in place. We continue to do home delivery to those who are the most at risk for contracting the virus.
70% of our funding comes from individuals and we could not do what we do without YOU! Please help us by making a donation to the Ely Area Food Shelf. Our shopper's are very grateful. Thank you for your generosity!
