We continuously say that abandoned properties do not have to be a direct cause of blight if we all work together. In simple estimated terms,  in order to maintain 1 property every year it takes 6 people to cut the grass 2x per month.  If we expand this same process to now include 15 properties, it would take 90 people.  Take into consideration that most blocks have 2 to 3 abandoned properties and Gary's baby boomer population is over 50% of residents,  and it is easy to see that there are more abandoned properties than there are able body residents to consistently maintain them.  So  what is the solution?  We are working towards two methods to increase our success in maintain our community of 15 abandoned properties

      1. Recruit volunteers outside of the community who come in and assist residents -  We are reaching out to  churches, community service organizations, and educational institutions.
      2.   Purchasing new lawnmower technology  equipment   which will allow 1 person to do the job of 6 people in the same amount of time

Instead of 6 people maintaining 1 property for the year, the same group could maintain 6 properties annually!

Gary Community Partnership is committed to working hard and in a way that does not burn out our volunteers.  We are seeking out educational institutions, community service organizations, and local worship institutions to partner with us in our volunteer efforts.  We are also soliciting federal grants and other philanthropy funding opportunities to purchase lawn equipment, but we need your help! With (2) Zero-Turn mowers (seen above) in our inventory we could easily maintain these 15 properties with our current volunteer force, allowing us to focus on expanding our reach to other neighborhoods and communities!  Consider a generous donation to support our purchase of equipment that will help us eliminate blight by empower residents with these tools necessary to maintain their neighborhoods.  All donations are 100% tax deductible within the limits of the law.
