The newspaper business has become increasingly difficult for many years. I attribute this primarily to advertisers shifting a portion of their advertising dollars towards online media, of which Google and Facebook take the lion’s share. But what are Google and Facebook doing to create local news on the community level? At Tigard Life, we’ve been fortunate to have the support of local businesses, which allows us to bring local news to every household in our city. But 18 months of the Covid-19 pandemic have taken their toll on the small businesses that support what we do.
We hoped that the pandemic would be short-lived and that we would eventually return to good economic times, but the pandemic seems to be here for the foreseeable future. Many of the small businesses that support Tigard Life, allowing us to bring you local community news each month, remain under pressure, and in some cases, have closed their doors. Most of the annual events that we advertise each year have been canceled, causing another source of revenue to dry up.
During this same period, especially the last couple of months, inflation has reared its ugly head in unison with supply-chain disruptions - for things like newsprint, ink, transportation, and even labor. All of this, combined with recent postage increases, has increased our cost to publish dramatically.
I’m committed to continuing to publish Tigard Life, but I need your help. Please consider a voluntary subscription to Tigard Life and help us to ensure our continued existence. While we suggest an annual subscription rate of $24, we understand that many families are experiencing similar financial restraints and welcome any amount. Even $1 lets us know you support what we do and will ensure that Tigard Life continues to be delivered to your mailbox each month. And if you can do more, we appreciate it. We’ve included a subscription form below that you can mail in, or you can visit our website at tigardlife.com/donate and make a subscription payment there.
And please feel free to reach out to me directly at any time.
Sincerely,
Michael Antonelli - Publisher
