Around 50,000 of the world's most vulnerable people have made their home in Dzaleka Refugee Camp. These refugees from around 10 Central African nations fled there to escape persecution in their home lands.
There are tens of thousands of children in camp. Many have experienced or witnessed unspeakable physical, sexual and emotional violence against themselves and their families. Among them are orphans, some of whom have witnessed their own loved ones abused, tortured, and even murdered before their own, young eyes.
Conditions in Dzaleka are very challenging. Refugees have no right to work legally, and as migrants have no access to farming land to grow food for themselves, as their Malawian neighbours do. Most are entirely dependent upon a meagre monthly allowance from the UNHCR. This is typically less than US5 per month.
