This holiday season, help us defend the right to be heard

I am alone in Moria with my two young children, Aisha (8) and Tahir (6). Before I spoke to European Lawyers in Lesvos I was completely lost. Their support helped me a lot. Thanks to them, I was able to understand the asylum process and explain in my interview why I left my country and cannot go back. They are a great help and give hope to the refugees in Moria. Fatima, 28, Syria.

There are currently 20,000 asylum seekers on the Greek island of Lesvos, the vast majority of whom have fled Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq. Over 18,000 of them are in Moria camp. In this context, ELIL’s role as the largest provider of legal assistance to asylum seekers on the island is more vital than ever before.

In November alone, over 4,000 asylum seekers landed on Lesvos after making the dangerous sea crossing from Turkey. In the same month of last year, the number stood at just over 400.

With hundreds still arriving every week and conditions rapidly deteriorating, the need to protect fundamental rights has never been greater or more challenging. As tens of thousands of asylum seekers face another long winter on the island, your support can help ELIL defend their rights and uphold the rule of law.
