Goal
The situation in South Lebanon
In light of the escalating situation regarding Israel and Palestine, Salam LADC and Salam Norway urgently seek to increase our emergency response and capacity in South Lebanon.
The villages of Kawkaba, Chebaa, Ebel el Saqi, Kfarchouba, Hebbariye, and Hasbaiyya are all close to the Israeli border, and highly vulnerable to bombings. In the event of an invasion or further bombings, these are among the first towns that will need to evacuate.
We have already adapted the Salam Centre in Kawkaba and turned it into an emergency shelter for internally displaced people (IDP) from neighbouring at-risk villages, where up to 40 individuals can take shelter. We also have limited stock including 25 emergency tents, medical equipment, food, and water. We need to supplement this further with food and water that can be distributed to the influx of IDPs from surrounding border towns.
Displacement in Winter
According to OCHA, the escalation of violence on the Lebanese-Israeli border has led to over 88,000 people becoming internally displaced. If the violence continues to escalate, we anticipate that many people will be forced to flee to the Bekaa Valley, where the majority of Salam LADC's projects take place.
The region will soon be facing extreme weather conditions including snow, heavy rain and nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing. Living conditions throughout the country will worsen, particularly in the Bekaa where many people are already struggling to survive.
Lebanon's ongoing economic crisis has led to the Lebanese lira weakening by over 90%, resulting in unprecedented price increases for food, basic necessities and fuel. The situation has been further exacerbated by the ripple effects of the war in Ukraine, with food price inflation skyrocketing by 352% and the prices of electricity, gas and other fuel surging by nearly 150%. As a result, an estimated 80% of the Lebanese population lives in poverty, whilst 90% of Syrian refugees cannot cover their basic needs.
As the cold weather grips Lebanon, few can afford fuel for heating or electricity amid widespread power cuts, forcing many to burn plastic, waste or clothes. The devastating impact of the crisis leaves families struggling to keep warm and to stave off hunger, whilst floods destroy poorly built homes and makeshift tents.
This year, Salam LADC will be providing vulnerable Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian families with food parcels, fuel for heating and warm clothes to help them survive the winter. To do this, we need your help.
