Kyiv, founded around 480, grew and rivaled Paris in size and splendor until Genghis Khan’s army burnt it to the ground in 1240. Moscow, founded by the Grand Prince of Kyiv as a trading outpost in 1147, was a small village when the Mongols invaded. However, with Kyiv and most of Kyivan Rus in ashes, Moscow took the opportunity to ally with the Mongols and soon became the Hord’s tax collector - and kept an ever-increasing portion of what was collected to enrich itself. Its rise to power is not due to its backwater standing in Kyivan Rus - but its rise to prominence in the Mongol Empire, whose battle tactics it continues to emulate to this day.
