26 January 2026 may be Australia Day but the Maltese Cross on the Queensland Flag was based on the Victoria Cross to commemorate the end of the Crimean War on 30 March 1856 (Russia lost to Britain and France). VC medals awarded for bravery were originally made from captured Sevastopol cannons and Queensland broke away from New South Wales to become a colony in its own right in 1859 under Queen Victoria.
