“Amala didn’t teach me how to read and write but taught me how to use my language to make the change… With Amala, there is hope.”
-Idriss, Amala Alumnus. Kakuma, Kenya, 2022
An estimated 18 million young people today live in forced displacement, approximately 80% of whom lack access to educational opportunities that help them improve their lives.
Only 41% of refugees access secondary education.
Only 6% of refugee youth go to university.
Education is disrupted and delayed when people are forced to flee their homes. A large proportion of the global population of refugee youth live in refugee camps and low-income countries. Multiple factors can contribute to the limited access to quality education for these young people, ranging from a lack of humanitarian funding, and national education systems, to age limitations, language barriers, poverty, and family and work commitments.
The majority of young refugees are therefore unable to reach their potential.
We believe that refugee youth, as all people, have a right to quality education.
We are on a mission to ensure that young refugees can access transformational learning that enables them to unleash their potential, make positive change in their own lives, their local communities and in global contexts.
Our work with young refugees improves lives today and opens up opportunities for tomorrow.
Give today, and join us on our journey enabling more young refugees to build a brighter future for themselves and the world.
Your donation, big or small, will make a valuable impact on the lives of the communities that we work with.

“Amala really expands the scope of thinking for refugee youth to think and work for the future.”
-Sara, Amala Alumna. Amman, Jordan, 2022
We are bold in our ambitions and we are determined to scale our work to reach more young refugees across the globe, but we need these donations to do the work.
Our delivery model is locally run and locally led.
We have two Amala-operated learning centres in Amman, Jordan and Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. Often, we work with community based, often refugee-led partner organisations to deliver learning programmes. In Kenya, every single member of our team has lived experience of displacement. In Jordan, our team is all local, 80% of whom have refugee backgrounds.
Our partnership delivery model is focused on enabling locally-run organisations to do and own the work.
Our overall education approach is all about working to build agency, confidence and sharing lifeworthy learning that equips refugee youth to lead the change they wish to see.
Our community of supporters is crucial to delivering this work.
It supports Amala to be flexible, to fill gaps in funding projects at a local level, whilst allowing us to invest in bringing about large scale, long term positive change, with and for refugee youth.
So far, our community of supporters has enabled Amala to reach over 2900 students.
We are on track to reach 5000 young people in total by the end of 2024.
We aim to reach tens of thousands more young refugees in the years to come.
