Goal
The problems our world face are immense. Unbridled ecological catastrophe is an imminent threat. Six men own more wealth than the bottom 50 percent of humanity combined. World leaders spend $1.7 trillion on war every year while hundreds of millions of people go hungry. Despite its reputation as a liberal paradise, Athens is not immune from these problems. In fact, Athens is the poorest and most unequal county in Ohio, and more than a quarter of Athens County children are food insecure.
The Democratic Party has long held power in Athens with virtually no opposition. The last time a Republican was on City Council in Athens, George W. Bush was in his first term. Yet, the Democrats have chosen time and time again to do nothing to change the status quo for Athens’s poor and working class.
I am running because I can see clear as day that capitalism is to blame for all of these problems. Capitalism is killing our planet. Capitalism is concentrating wealth in the hands of the few at the expense of the many. Capitalism is turning workers against one another, breeding racism, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia. If we want any hope of freedom, any hope of justice, and any hope of survival, we need to organize as workers and fight back now. We need to overthrow this rotten system and replace it with one based on human need, not corporate greed. That’s why I’m proud to call myself a socialist, and I’m proud to be running for City Council.
I want to use this election and my seat on Council to lift up the voices of social movements and workers’ struggles. I want to highlight the problems facing our community and their causes, and be a part of the struggle for real solutions. I am tired of being told that nothing can be done when it is clear that the people in power just don’t like what is required to make a change. I hope you will join me!
