Edna Mae Phillips taught physical education at WWHS and served as the first female member of the WVSSAC Board of Appeals. Her husband was a sales engineer; he died in Nov., 2007. Edna May died in June 2014. Their fund encourages girls to participate in athletics at WWHS by providing plaques recognizing the outstanding female athlete in each sanctioned sport offered. Income is also used for the general fund of Beckley Presbyterian Church.
