Restoration of Eckersberg's
“Panorama drawing from the Crown Prince’s Bastion at Kronborg. Ramparts all around the Horizon Circle, Elsinore” (1824)
Pencil, pen, black ink and gray levering on yellowish paper pieced together from eight sheets of paper, 21 x 264 cm, KKS1999-66
About the restoration project
During the 1820's, C.W. Eckersberg created a group of at least five townscape/landscape panoramas designed to be mounted in a circle with the viewer standing in the middle as if placed in the panorama itself.
Unfortunately, none of the panoramas remain in their original state. However, three large drawn compositions do exist: one in the Ordrupgaard and two in the SMK, one of which was recently shown at the Beyond the Light: Identity and Place in Nineteenth-Century Danish Art exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles.
The panorama from the castle of Kronborg is the third and is unfortunately mounted in two separate frames. The separate frames break up the otherwise continuous panorama. Restoring and mounting the frames together would restore the vision of C.W. Eckersberg.
The panorama is in need of cleaning and repair. With your help, it will undergo the following processes and treatment:
- Unframing and handling
- Separation of layers, hinges
- Examinations, incl. tests
- Cleaning, incl. analysis
- Re-joining
- Mounting, all edges
- Photo documentation
- Framing
- Documentation, report
