FOOD FOR UKRAINE
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, tens of thousands of people have been killed and maimed on Ukrainian soil, many Ukrainian cities have been reduced to rubble, and their inhabitants forced to flee.
The conflict continues to inflict immeasurable human suffering, deaths and destruction, putting millions at risk of serious violations and generating grave humanitarian needs. As of the end of 2023, some 14 million Ukrainians have fled their homes since February 2022 and today, roughly one in three families in Ukraine — 11 million people — are food insecure.
This represents the largest human displacement crisis in the world today.
It is predicted that over 14.6 million people – about 40% of the Ukrainian population – will need humanitarian assistance in 2024.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has had a devastating impact on the region, leaving 17.6 million people in need, with 11.1 million people targeted for assistance, and 11 million people reached as of 31 December 2023. The crisis has also resulted in 3.67 million internally displaced people and 5.97 million refugees in European countries.
"The scale of humanitarian needs in Ukraine remains vast. More than 14.6 million people – about 40 per cent of Ukraine’s population – require some form of humanitarian assistance. Four million people – including nearly one million children – are still displaced within the country. Over 6.3 million people continue to live as refugees in neighbouring European countries and globally."

This staggering displacement and humanitarian crisis highlight the urgent need for continued international support and efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
As of February 2024, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that:
The year 2023 saw an escalation in the Ukraine conflict, with over 47,000 incidents involving armed clashes, airstrikes, and other attacks. This marked a significant increase from 2022, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED). The widespread damage and destruction affected homes, hospitals, schools, and critical civilian infrastructure, severely impacting the humanitarian situation. Although the entire country was affected, the eastern and southern regions bore the brunt of the devastation.
In front-line communities, including the territories occupied by the Russian Federation, the humanitarian situation is reaching severe and catastrophic levels. More than 3.3 million people – including 800,000 children – living along the front line require emergency assistance. Access to water, food, adequate shelter, fuel to heat their homes and cook, health, protection and other essential services and supplies, as well as employment and livelihoods is extremely limited, forcing people to depend on humanitarian aid to meet their needs.
