Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is the month that we remember the brave survivors who successfully left and are healing, but also, we remember those who lost their lives at the hands of their abuser.
The Department of Justice defines domestic violence as "a pattern of abusive behavior in an intimate relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, psychological, or technological actions or threats of actions or other patterns of coercive behavior that influence another person within an intimate partner relationship. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone."
Be Their Voice. Know the Facts.
- One in three women and one in four men will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime.
- The average times a woman leaves her abuser is SEVEN.
- 96% of women who reported abuse to a hotline, said they had experienced emotional abuse.
- Women ages 18-24 and 25-34 generally experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence.
- One in ten high school students has experienced physical violence from an intimate partner in the last year.
Why does Hagar's Heart exist?
Emotional abuse.
Emotionally abusive partners frequently assert control by restricting their partners’ social interactions, activities, and movements. They instill feelings of shame and fear, using insults, threats, and punishments that gradually undermine their partner's self-esteem. These abusers may also interfere with their partners’ ability to make decisions and, at times, even block them from working or spending time with family and friends, effectively isolating them.
The programs of Hagar's Heart center around the emotional trauma from abuse. While we are in four North Texas counties, we have to grow. Domestic violence doesn't just occur in the metroplex. It is in every zip code.
This month, help us grow to help those who cannot help themselves.
