SEPTEMBER 20, 2022 |DOORS OPEN AT 6:00PM| ABRONS ART CENTER | NYC

Join Us at Diaspora Despierta, a fundraiser commemorating the five years of recovery led by the people of Puerto Rico. This event celebrates the power of community driven change and highlights what is possible when communities identify their own priorities and work together to develop solutions.

COMMEMORATING PeOPLE-LED MOVEMENTS

BACKGROUND

In 2017, shortly after Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico, Dianne Morales launched a campaign to fund grassroots groups on the island- what started as a small effort to raise $5K quickly grew to over $40K. Five years later, the island continues to suffer from broken promises and corrupt policies. But this has not halted the movement. Residents continue to advocate for and work towards a just recovery. This event uplifts people-led initiatives on the island. We invite you to invest in these efforts and amplify self-determination for Puerto Rico.

EVENT DETAILS

We will begin with a screening of the film We Still Here which highlights the power of community through the journey of a group of young people in the pueblo of Comerío. Following the film there will be a panel discussion - moderated by Sunny Hostin, featuring youth activists from the film, academics and others who address injustice on the island. We will conclude the night with A Taste of Puerto Rico - a reception with Puerto Rican food, drink & entertainment.
