Del Fuego Project
Mission: A community-based approach, combining science and local knowledge to build capacity in smallholder coffee farming communities
Addressing the damage to agricultural systems requires a long-ranging, multi-faceted approach that, to be effective, must be built on a combination of science, technological advancement and local customs, culture and knowledge. It must be long-term and not a quick fix, addressing the underlying issues of poor profitability and lack of autonomy that have been obstacles to progress in the Yepocapa region for some time.
The Del Fuego Project has the mission to build on scientific investigations and strong relationships with several organizations of smallholder farmers with a long-term approach designed to help the Yepocapa farmers recover from losses brought by the eruption, and ultimately become more resistant, resilient, and autonomous.
Del Fuego holds an annual event called the Coffee Quality Summit, designed to introduce farmers to methods of targeting high cup quality and beginning and maintaining relationships with specialty buyers.
It costs just $15 to host a farmer to attend this event. Further donations help Del Fuego carry out research to better identify ways of targeting cup quality through field and post-harvest management.
Stay tuned for other ways to get involved and support Yepocapa farmers!
