Darick and Rue Murray

Greetings in Christ,

My name is Darick Murray, and I would first like to thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I am writing to you as a newly appointed part-time employee with Productive Lives, where I will be serving as the Coordinator of Street Outreach.

I come from what I would describe as an atheist background. My father has been absent since I was three years old, so I have little to share about him. However, my mother is a faithful Christian woman who raised me and my siblings—of whom I am the youngest—with strong moral values rooted in the Christian faith.

Despite her efforts, the hardships of life led us all away from Christianity for a time. Living without a belief in God, though He was always present, I experienced a deep sense of hopelessness. That hopelessness often manifested in anger, particularly toward those who had hope—especially hope in God. I became openly hostile toward believers, passionately attacking their morals and convictions, and my unbelief grew into genuine hatred.

Several years later, I met my first girlfriend, Rut, who is now my wife. Though she identified as agnostic at the time, she had been raised with Pentecostal values. She had lived in Kensington with her mother for many years, and eventually, I moved in with them as we became emotionally dependent on one another for a sense of happiness.

After the passing of Rut’s uncle, the comfort we found in each other was no longer sufficient to sustain her through her grief. She returned to a place she had once known—a youth group at Cornerstone Community Church—where she felt called to pursue a relationship with Christ. When she shared this with me, I resisted strongly and tried to persuade her otherwise, but she remained steadfast. Reluctantly, I allowed her to continue.

After a few weeks, I decided to attend with her. My initial impression of the church community was one of skepticism. The kindness, warmth, and genuine care I encountered were unfamiliar to me. I questioned their motives, as such love was not something I had experienced before. However, over time, I came to understand that this love was sincere—it was the love of Christ working through His people.

One Sunday, when Rut stayed home due to illness, I faced a decision: remain with her or go to church alone. I realized that if I chose not to go, I would be denying what I had begun to believe. That day, I took my first true step of faith, and by God’s grace, I have continued walking with Him ever since.

In the years that followed, I became a devoted follower of Christ. Under the guidance of our mentors, Rut and I chose to stop cohabiting, were married, and eventually purchased our home. We became deeply involved in our church, serving in various ministries including children’s programs, youth outreach, worship, and Bible studies.

It was during this time that I met Cam, the founder of Productive Lives. He brought teams of interns to serve alongside local ministries throughout Kensington. Even during their short time there, their impact on the community was profound. I was struck by the realization that people were traveling from distant places to share the Gospel in a neighborhood that I had long considered my own.

This inspired Rut and me to step forward as volunteers with Productive Lives. It was through this ministry that I came to understand my calling as an evangelist. For the first time, I began to see individuals struggling with addiction—not as I once had, but through the eyes of Christ. Where I had once felt avoidance, I now felt compassion. My heart broke for those I had previously judged.

Today, I serve in street outreach, sharing with others the same love of Jesus that was so freely given to me. Rut continues to serve faithfully as well, working with youth in the local school that once welcomed us. Together, we are grateful to live lives devoted to Christ’s service.

May God’s grace be with you all.

In Christ,
Darick and Rut Murray

As we help to share Jesus and His love with the people who need Him, we want to invite you to join us and help support the work that God is doing in any/all of these four ways:

  1. Prayer

Your prayers sustain us as we serve. Pray for wisdom, protection, and open doors to reach those who need hope most.

  1. Serve

Come serve alongside us in Kensington or on trips—handing out meals, working on homes, and building relationships with the community.

  1. Financial Support

Your financial support strengthens the mission of Productive Lives. Specifically, it allows us to dedicate ourselves full-time to communication, outreach, and systems that keep this ministry running strong. We are looking for one-time gifts and/or monthly support.

  1. Share

We are always looking for more people to understand what we do and join us on our mission. We ask that you share about Productive Lives and what we do with those close to you. We hope that through your connection, those close to you can join in the JOY of helping others.
