COVID-19 & Protest Rapid Response Fund

COVID-19 & Protest Rapid Response Fund

The Philadelphia Bail Fund is working urgently to free as many of our neighbors as possible during this pandemic. There is an urgent need to post bail as COVID-19 threatens people in jail, where crowded living quarters and inadequate health care make conditions ripe for a viral outbreak.

We stand in solidarity with those protesting the murder of Walter Wallace, Jr. at the hands of Philadelphia police, and earlier this year we supported Philadelphians protesting the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department. We demand an end to police violence against Black communities and are committed to providing direct bail assistance to people participating in actions to ensure their safe return home.

Since January 2020, we helped bring over 300 people home from Philly’s jails. But we continue to receive a flood of referrals, as our neighbors continue to be held in cages.

Your donation helps us respond quickly by freeing our neighbors who remain in jail simply because they cannot pay bail. Your support now means we can free as many people as possible, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

I was almost a victim of bail for alleged charges against me which I then had to fight an expensive battle against and thankfully won. Which was surely due to my white privilege. Nonetheless bail is bullshit. We have the technology to send people home and make sure they show up for court. I saw people in court sent to jail who couldn't make bail who were stuck in jail; their court date got deferred, they lost their job, their custody of their children and their apartments. I was really Disturbed and angry. I got lucky, my 76 yr old parents made it to pay bail with 5 minutes before they shut down. I was in line for the bus to go to prison. I have nightmares to this day. Those poor women I saw that day weren't that lucky, they lost all that. They would be five to ten years behind in all their hard work just to scramble back to the place they had been before being arrested.
