COVID-19 & Protest Rapid Response Fund

COVID-19 & Protest Rapid Response Fund

The Philadelphia Bail Fund is working urgently to free as many of our neighbors as possible during this pandemic. There is an urgent need to post bail as COVID-19 threatens people in jail, where crowded living quarters and inadequate health care make conditions ripe for a viral outbreak.

We stand in solidarity with those protesting the murder of Walter Wallace, Jr. at the hands of Philadelphia police, and earlier this year we supported Philadelphians protesting the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department. We demand an end to police violence against Black communities and are committed to providing direct bail assistance to people participating in actions to ensure their safe return home.

Since January 2020, we helped bring over 300 people home from Philly’s jails. But we continue to receive a flood of referrals, as our neighbors continue to be held in cages.

Your donation helps us respond quickly by freeing our neighbors who remain in jail simply because they cannot pay bail. Your support now means we can free as many people as possible, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

As a part on the Asian American community and son of immigrant parents I understand the pain. I also understand that despite the challenges that we as Asians have faced, we also benefit from privilege in this country. We are not their “model minority” and must refuse to buy into that rhetoric and allow them to use that to oppress our fellow brothers, sisters, friends and family in our black and brown communities. If we want any hope of bringing equality for all, we must first raise up our Black and Brown communities or we will never be able to achieve that goal. Let us fight hate not to benefit ourselves but to show our oppressors that our diversity is the true strength of our country and that when we stand together, there is no amount of force that can stop us.

We need to do much better as white people for our brothers and sisters of color. It is abysmal how they face systematic racism every day and the unjust murder of their loved ones and we need to do something about that. Educate ourselves and others, sign petitions, donate, ask questions, seek answers. ALL LIVES DO NOT MATTER UNTIL BLACK LIVES MATTER, so miss me with that shit

Bail is often disproportionately applied to poc and is a major part of the industrial prison complex that keeps innocent people locked up. Bail makes being poor a crime and assumes rich people are more trust worthy. We must end money bail!
