COVID-19 & Protest Rapid Response Fund
The Philadelphia Bail Fund is working urgently to free as many of our neighbors as possible during this pandemic. There is an urgent need to post bail as COVID-19 threatens people in jail, where crowded living quarters and inadequate health care make conditions ripe for a viral outbreak.
We stand in solidarity with those protesting the murder of Walter Wallace, Jr. at the hands of Philadelphia police, and earlier this year we supported Philadelphians protesting the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department. We demand an end to police violence against Black communities and are committed to providing direct bail assistance to people participating in actions to ensure their safe return home.
Since January 2020, we helped bring over 300 people home from Philly’s jails. But we continue to receive a flood of referrals, as our neighbors continue to be held in cages.

Here are some ideas that should be implemented immediately to help eliminate police murders. 1. Hitting someone you have in custody simply because they said something to you that you don't like but isn't threatening your well being otherwise equals assault. Job loss and jail time, period. 2. No more putting people on the ground on their stomachs. Sit them up on the ground. It's equally as hard for them to run away. If they are being unruly, no more than two officers should have them on the ground. One should hold their legs while the other holds down the lower back area. 3. Gun holstered when alleged criminal has arms up. That's a white flag. Common sense clearly shows they aren't going to hurt you plus we've seen enough videos of cops being peaceful towards white men with guns. 4. It's common knowledge police over enforce minority areas for revenue because they don't want to deal with lawyers and cases that will spring up in affluent areas. Raise taxes on the affluent areas and leave black and brown people alone. Find other ways to make money that don't include harassment. 5. No more raids in non life or death situations. Period. Police are too incompetent. People have to leave their homes. Wait and detain. 6. When arresting someone who needs medication such as Sandra Bland, it's up to the precinct to secure necessary medication within two hours of arrest. Not doing so results in a citation. The arresting officer should be trialed for manslaughter if not having medication leads to death. 7. Designate a speaker. As we've seen in police videos, time and time again multiple cops yell at a civilian but yell conflicting directions. We've seen time and time again black men being shot for pulling out wallets to show identification as instructed. Decide who gives the instruction to reduce confusion. 8. Legislation similar to the Castle Doctrine that protects Good Samaritans who interfere with police when they see excessive and deadly force.
