COVID-19 & Protest Rapid Response Fund

COVID-19 & Protest Rapid Response Fund

The Philadelphia Bail Fund is working urgently to free as many of our neighbors as possible during this pandemic. There is an urgent need to post bail as COVID-19 threatens people in jail, where crowded living quarters and inadequate health care make conditions ripe for a viral outbreak.

We stand in solidarity with those protesting the murder of Walter Wallace, Jr. at the hands of Philadelphia police, and earlier this year we supported Philadelphians protesting the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department. We demand an end to police violence against Black communities and are committed to providing direct bail assistance to people participating in actions to ensure their safe return home.

Since January 2020, we helped bring over 300 people home from Philly’s jails. But we continue to receive a flood of referrals, as our neighbors continue to be held in cages.

Your donation helps us respond quickly by freeing our neighbors who remain in jail simply because they cannot pay bail. Your support now means we can free as many people as possible, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Thank you for helping free members of our community unfairly jailed by a violent and white supremacist PD

Philadelphia (where I go to college) is, at this point, my true home. I have no doubt that I would be out there protesting right now if I was there. But because of the pandemic, I am forced to watch at a distance, from my EXTREMELY police-loving Long Island hometown. My best friends are being tear gassed; families of POC students I've taught, already at disadvantaged positions, are probably fearing for their communities' safety. I love this city, but I know that it needs to change. The police needs to be defunded, plain and simple. No matter how many reactive "training programs" are put in place, if cops are funded like the military, they will act like the military. They have proven, time and time again, that they will inevitably succumb to violent delusions of grandeur, human decency be damned. That extra money should instead be put towards education, public health, the arts, infrastructure, and transportation, not to mention all of the other programs that could let black communities thrive WITHOUT having to worry about their members being killed. Oh, and yeah, jails should have never been turned into for-profit businesses. In the meantime, this is the least I could do.

Abolish the militarized police! Take down this capitalistic system that relies on racism to survive! To the protestors who are putting their bodies on the line for the rest of us, especially in the middle of a pandemic, thank you. We love you and we support you.
