Connecting Atlanta, One Story at a Time

Hey friends & family!

This year marks my second year of board service for Canopy Atlanta and what a year it has been! Canopy Atlanta is continually committed to advancing community-powered journalism, but this year our staff and fellows outdid themselves with some truly incredible work. My personal favorites include: 

• “Hope for a Post-it note” by Genia Billingsley, about the fatigue that comes from unfulfilled promises of community development (published as a part our Cost of Living Project)

• “Asian seniors look for a new ‘home’ after community organization cuts programs” by Sophia Qureshi (our writer-in-residence and founder of 285 South)

• “How Wall Street created an affordable housing crisis in South DeKalb” by Logan Ritchie (published as a part of our South DeKalb Community Issue)

We pride ourselves on sharing powerful stories about Atlanta, stories that often go untold. And we've witnessed how telling these stories has the power to ignite change, foster connections, and empower Atlantans to advocate for themselves and their neighbors. That said, we continually seek the support that makes this work possible. To quote our creative director Floyd Hall:

“Canopy Atlanta is a nonprofit. That means we don't charge for access to our journalism, and we don't run ads on our website. We don't profit from the journalism we produce, because we believe access to timely, accurate, and community-powered journalism is a necessity—not a luxury. We strongly believe our nonprofit model will only grow more important in the future.

But this also means we rely on supporters like you to make our mission possible: to pay our journalism fellows, train citizens on how to cover local government meetings, and fund the vital journalism that serves under-reported communities all across Atlanta.”
