Goal

Congolese refugees in Uganda. How can we help?

This February, we will be working in Western Uganda helping with the massive influx of refugees who are fleeing from neighboring countries.  An estimated 2 million refugees have fled their home countries such as South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We have great admiration for host countries such as Bangladesh, Lebanon, and Uganda, who have plenty of difficulties of their own, but still accept refugees from their troubled neighbors.

We will be working on the border of Uganda and the Congo in one of the country's largest refugee settlements called Kyangwali. With its estimated 125,000 refugees, and 80% women and children from the Congo, we feel the need is great and want to do our part to help. The heart of Africa is in despair, with very little assistance and even less news coverage. The Congolese are fleeing ethnic wars, political upheaval, and authoritarian rule. We have heard first hand the unbelievable stories of torcher and genocide.  The host country of Uganda is struggling as well and just dealt with an Ebola outbreak. In the past few days, Uganda has lifted restrictions for travel as they’ve beaten this terrible virus, for now.

Unfortunately with limited resources, we are not able to help everyone in Kyangwali settlement. We will be focusing our efforts on two locations, a busy clinic and a large school. At the clinic, Dr. Suzanne will be teaching the Butterfly ultrasound to Ugandan doctors as they see hundreds of patients. This is an overcrowded and resource poor clinic, but having new technology such as this ultrasound will greatly help those in need. We will also be teaching WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) to the staff at this clinic and the main school. We are planning on installing 40 water filters in the clinic and school, greatly helping the staff, patients, and students with safe water, something most of us take for granted.

If you would like to assist in giving free and safe water for years to come, please donate below. A one time $25 gift of a water filter can change 100 students live’s with safe water, which in turn means no diarrhea and better schooling. Can you imagine being a patient in a clinic but the water they give is full of bacteria? Again, even with just one water filter, it can change the future of hundreds of patients.

Would you be interested in helping those who have almost nothing?  We know this emergency in Uganda and the Congo isn’t on most people's radar, but our impact there will be much greater with your assistance. Any donation, big or small, will make a positive drop in the bucket. We will make sure that this drop will ripple out to as many neglected Congolese as possible.

Thank you.
