Goal
What's up with all those tree tubes? We are planting a community and research-oriented fruit and nut orchard!
This includes planting heritage apples and cold-hardy pears and apricots. We are also planting a new cold-hardy grape called Itasca as well as blueberries and lingonberries. Our nut-tree plantings include butterheart groves, heart nut trees, hazelnuts, and sweet chestnuts. Learn more about why we are so excited about chestnuts.
Our goal is to provide a local food source to the Island and also to find the best types of fruit and nut trees for our climate so that we can share our learnings with home gardeners. We are searching for the most disease-resistant, delicious, and productive trees, shrubs and vines.
