Mary Ann and her daughter, Katie

As a NICU nurse for 39 years, Mary Ann was instrumental in assisting many families when they worked through the loss of their children. Then she experienced the same unthinkable loss when her youngest daughter, Katie, passed away at just 33 years old following a battle with cancer. Mary Ann's search for a way to create a legacy for Katie — one that allowed her to help others — led her to Comfort CubsComfort Cubs are weighted therapy bears that trigger the brain to release the “cuddle hormone,” offering emotional comfort and physical relief from a distressing loss. Their creator, Marcella Johnson, was inspired to design these bears after having to leave the NICU empty-handed following the loss of her infant son. Mary Ann was inspired by this story and has chosen to remember Katie with a generous donation of 36 Comfort Cubs to UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. Your gift will help us purchase even more Comfort Cubs to help even more families.
