Colombia Needs Urgent Aid After Devastating Earthquake

On August 10, the strongest earthquake to hit Colombia this century struck western Colombia near San José del Palmar, collapsing buildings across multiple cities, killing more than 200 people, and injuring hundreds more with the toll still rising. 

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit at 7:34 a.m. local time, when families were in their homes and cities were just beginning the day. In Cali, Colombia's third-largest city, the pediatric and neonatal sections of a hospital collapsed. In Pereira, entire residential blocks were reduced to rubble. 

Across the hardest-hit regions, more than 5,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, seven airports have suspended flights, and people remain trapped as search-and-rescue operations continue.
