Chicago Marathon

Running a marathon with 30% lung capacity and carrying a 3 kg oxygen unit is very challenging but it is my reality. I was diagnosed with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) 11 years ago at 45. In the early days I was told I'd need a double lung transplant within 5 years. Here I am 11 years later still running marathons with the same old dodgy lungs.

Running became a part of my life as it helps me keep on top of my disease. I love running marathons as it's something which allows me to feel normal. I'm not fast and normally finish close to last but the support and encouragement I receive in a marathon makes it all worthwhile. 

Marathons also give me the opportunity to raise awareness and fundraise for charities in the respiratory community. COPD Foundation do amazing work in my community, supporting research and patients as well as providing a wealth of educational resources.
