La Chartreuse de Neuville
For over 700 years, the Chartreuse de Neuville has been a place where ideas, artistry, and humanity converge. The largest Carthusian monastery in France, it has served as a home for monks, a creative hub for artists led by Nobel laureate Anatole France, a refuge for thousands of Belgian refugees during World War I, a hospital in World War II, and later a place of long-term care. Abandoned in 1998 and at risk of collapse, it is now being restored through a pioneering model of cultural and social entrepreneurship. Today, the Chartreuse hosts international conferences, residencies for artists and researchers, heritage craft training, educational workshops, cultural events, and initiatives that promote social inclusion and biodiversity stewardship—welcoming more than 20,000 visitors each year.
The Chartreuse is now undergoing one of France’s most ambitious revivals since Notre-Dame—revitalizing not just the building, but its centuries-old spirit of hospitality, creativity, and exchange. Your support will help expand the artistic and educational programming of this extraordinary site, complete the restoration, and secure the remaining 49% of the property, contributing to the reinvigoration of the wider rural territory into an attractive, thriving place for generations to come.
By giving today, you become part of a bold vision—reviving a historic treasure, fostering creativity and dialogue, and inspiring new ideas for the next 700 years. Join us in writing the Chartreuse de Neuville’s next chapter.
