Changing Lives Through Education
Darasa is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has identified a large need in the refugee community. The need arises from refugee children being thrown into a school in the US with little to no English education, and then having to take Math, Science, and History courses in English. These classes are tough enough as is, but having to learn them in a new language and country can be extremely difficult. Additionally, the ESOL programs in some of these schools don't do an adequate enough job to actually prepare refugee students for the classes they take.
We address this social problem by connecting college students with refugee students in the public school system. These college students become the personal English tutors for the refugee students, meeting with them twice a week for an hour to provide additional support and ensure they succeed during school and after.
Our organization is entirely volunteer run, and we have already spent a few hundred dollars of our own money in order to establish our organization as a non-profit 501(c)(3). We are asking for donations of any amount in order to help us expand our impact to other university's throughout the US, hire an executive director, market ourselves to the community, subsidize dues for our tutors, and to continue to change the lives of refugee students.
