Ceramic City Stories

Ceramic City Stories is a Community Interest Company* (non profit) based in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Our work is focussed on local, national & international shared stories related to Stoke-on-Trent, England (UK).

The Potteries (Stoke-on-Trent) is the home of iconic ceramic giants including Minton, Spode, Doulton and Wedgwood, as well as many other large and small manufacturers. Their combined production spans more than three centuries and includes plates, cups, vases, tiles, sanitary ware and other heavy clay products (bricks, chimneys pipes). The city is much more than just the heroic story of 'coal and clay' of course. 'Potters' (people from Stoke-on-Trent) are proud of this unique city and its federated 'six towns': Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton, Longton.

The city has been hit hard by the decline of its traditional core industries. However, it is beginning to find its feet again through the combined efforts of grass-roots activists and a number of flagship renewal projects. There have been some encouraging signs of cultural and economic renewal in more recent years. As this momentum sustains and grows - the challenge will be how to ensure that local people drive and benefit from this transformation.

People make places: Ceramic City Stories provides a focus & catalyst for DIY research, micro campaigns & other positive 'small change' actions.
