Goal
Originally founded to advocate for just wages and working conditions among San Antonio’s public school workers, Southwest Workers Union’s, also known as Centro por la Justicia, scope of work and political impact has grown significantly over the past 36 years to address the multiple facets of injustice that impact low-income families in South Texas.
In the past five years Centro SWU has been part of closing the last coal plant in San Antonio (2023), increasing programs for weatherization, and commitments for alternative energy and the divestment from fossil fuels. Our team canvassed 450,000 San Antonio residents in the last 6 years on climate, reproductive justice, immigration, democracy and shared educational information about voting, added new board members and updated internal governance structures, and held close to 200 SWU School sessions on gardening, plant medicine, movement history, anti-war, poetry & writing, traditional skills, racism, organizing, and more. During Covid Centro facilitated direct funding of close to $100,000 in community vouchers, utility vouchers, and financial assistance programs and distributed 10,000 bags of fresh food to support families during financial crisis.
Ultimately, our work is towards supporting our communities ability to fight back against injustice and support our members in building safe and clean communities. Mutual aid and leadership development continue to be the center of our work as families continue to struggle with injust policies aimed directly at low income workers. We continue to work toward better communities by directly participating in changing policy, hosting weekly events, coalition building, education and building our center to support the mission and vision.
