2021 Thorsen House Donation Drive
"Designed and built for the lumberman William Randolph Thorsen and his wife, Caroline... This house is the fourth and last of their so called 'ultimate bungalows,' which were created between 1907 and 1910... Surely it can be said that this 'group of four constitutes the most ebullient realization of the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement in America" -Robert Judson Clark, "Last of the Ultimate Bungalows"
The California Sigma Phi needs your help!
We're calling on members young and old to come together. Let's restore & preserve our home's former luster before opening our doors to our siblings across the country.
We have a few large undertakings before us, and some relatively small stuff, that we can break off in small chunks. Jerry Barclay has been working to develop a 10 year plan, which includes some very high ticket items, such as mitigating the damage from earthquakes. In general, the categories we will be spending money on:
- Exterior (Falls under Easement Agreement restrictions and procedures)
- Interior (note that some areas fall under Easement Agreement restrictions and procedures)
- Plumbing, Heating, Fire Protection & Electrical Systems
Fire is always the most immediate threat to our house. It will cost us nearly $50000 to bring our existing sprinkler system up to date. The cost sounds high, but we are currently getting regular visits from the fire department due to false alarms, and most of these are preventable.
- Furnishings, Fixtures & Equipment
- Reupholstering rugs & drapes for upcoming conventions and house tours
The Alumni Board has noticed a drop in donations to SPEF. Some of this is due to expiring credit cards. So if you've been planning to renew your pledge to our sweet, sweet society you're in luck! Please consider donating what you can, in honor of who you love, or for no reason in particular! Every cent counts when it comes to preserving our historical home.
