Three years ago, I joined Miles for CF. M4CF was a small, Atlanta-based nonprofit providing direct support to those living with CF in Georgia. M4CF owned and operated the Big Peach Sizzler as their primary fundraising event. It was an event I knew well from past work experience. 

Shortly after I joined M4CF, we merged with the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation and renamed as BreatheStrong CF. This immediately took our support area from Georgia, to national!

James received an AffloVest in 2023 from BreatheStrong CF. It enables his family to be committed to treatments even on the go!

What a ride it has been. In the three years since I have joined the cystic fibrosis community the CF world has turned almost upside down. For someone with CF born in 2022 (when I started with M4CF) the median life expectancy was 56. Just 3 years later, for someone with CF born in 2025, the median life expectancy is in the 60s! Advancements in treatments and disease management have made all the difference. 

However, there are many different "forms" of CF. This great news is not "one size fits all." And living with CF is expensive even if someone has great medical insurance.

BreatheStrong CF supports those living with CF, now. Direct support (grants given to the person with CF) come in various ways:

• Exercise Grants reduce the financial barrier many face to accessing quality of life enhancing and care team prescribed activity. 
• Susan C. Burroughs Critical Needs Initiative helps Georgia CF families keep groceries on the table and gas in their car. 
• Loretta Morris Memorial Fund supports people with CF in California who exercise through dance, golf, equestrian and aquatic activities.

I have been reminded not to take for granted my health or my family's health. I have met and continue to meet some of the most incredible people thanks to the CF community.
