FILM SYNOPSIS
Since 1910, tens of thousands of munitions were dumped into the ocean–often mere miles from shore–by militaries from nearly every industrialized country. They’re now decaying, causing cancer, and in the U.S., the Navy wants to “BIP”—or blow them up, which would have devastating consequences on human and marine ecosystems worldwide. Dr. James Porter—a Peabody- and Emmy-winning ecologist—and a team of world-renowned international and local researchers are racing against the clock to prove there is a better way.
Interwoven with the science team’s race to prove their method, this documentary film tells the story of two islands—Vieques, Puerto Rico and Kaho’olawe, Hawaii—both sacred places with a long colonialist history that were commandeered by the U.S. military during WWII. Although the military has since stopped using these sites for target practice and bomb disposal, the islands still bear the scars. Just off-shore, bombs that missed their targets are embedded in coral reefs, eroding and leaking their contents into the water. Vieques has a growing cancer pocket and residents of Hawaii still don’t have unrestricted access to the sacred island.
The Hawaiian government has granted Dr. Porter and a team of world-renowned scientists and researchers an opportunity to prove that these UXO’s can be removed safely, without further damage to the fragile reef around them. The plan is complex and high-risk. But if successful, it could be replicated worldwide, saving human lives and protecting our marine ecosystems.
