Since year 2000, the Los Angeles Urban League has proudly hosted the Los Angeles Black High School Graduation, a signature county-wide event that honors the academic achievements, resilience, and aspirations of Black and other underrepresented students across Los Angeles County. What began as a community-driven response during the isolating days of the COVID-19 pandemic has since evolved into a powerful annual tradition—uplifting a generation of graduates who are redefining excellence, perseverance, and purpose.
This event is more than a celebration—it's a movement. It celebrates scholars who have triumphed over systemic challenges, economic hardships, and digital divides to walk boldly toward their futures. With a platform that highlights academic all-stars and shares their stories through a culturally rich lens, the event also elevates vocational training, entrepreneurship, and non-traditional post-secondary paths, reminding every student that their future is both valid and valuable—no matter the route they choose.
The LA Black High School Graduation has garnered national attention, with congratulatory messages from university presidents, celebrities, corporate leaders, and a heartfelt address from then-Senator Kamala Harris. Each year, the ceremony is infused with inspiration, featuring first-generation college-bound students, valedictorians, and those who have overcome extraordinary odds to reach the graduation stage.
Thanks to generous support from partners like Comerica Bank, Farmers Insurance, and American Airlines, we have distributed over $100,000 in scholarships to empower students' next steps—whether in college, trade schools, or workforce entry.
As we look to expand this impactful initiative, we invite funders, corporations, and civic leaders to join us in scaling our reach, growing scholarship opportunities, and investing in the dreams of youth who represent the future of Los Angeles. Your partnership will not only support a celebration—it will ignite a legacy.
