Last year we participated for the first time and identified over 60 species! Can we beat that number this year?
Trip report:
It was a beautiful day (May 10), so we had a great time and observed 75 species. We visited Huntley Meadows Park, Town of Occocoquan, Occocoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Meadowood Recreation Area, and Monticello Park.
Birdathon is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance (NVBA). Like a walk-a-thon, participants collect pledges from friends and family via their team page. Then they record how many species they can identify during any 24-hour period between April 19 and May 18.
Birdathon helps NVBA to support outdoor education, citizen science, habitat conservation and programs to encourage people to plant native plants and protect native wildlife. Birdathon also helps ornithologists better understand spring migration by reporting sightings through eBird, an online database of bird observations run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Thank you!
