72 unique species found!!!!

Introducing Flock Around & Find Out—a spirited trio united by friendship and a passion for birding.

Ken and Arielle's bond dates back to high school, and together with Arielle's partner, Nathan, they're embarking on an avian adventure. Their mission: to spot at least 75 unique species and clinch the "Most Species Counted by a New Team" award. Nathan dreams of glimpsing a Golden-winged Warbler, Arielle is on the lookout for a Baltimore Oriole (and she found one!!!), and Ken is embracing the journey, ready to discover whatever wings his way.

But their quest goes beyond personal milestones. Bird populations are in alarming decline, primarily due to habitat loss. According to the 2025 State of the Birds report by NABCI, over one-third of U.S. bird species now require urgent conservation action. Grassland birds have suffered a 43% decline since 1970, and aridland birds aren't far behind with a 41% drop. Even waterfowl, once a conservation success story, are experiencing significant decreases. These statistics underscore the pressing need for habitat conservation to reverse these trends.

By supporting Flock Around & Find Out, you're directly contributing to the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance (NVBA) and its mission to protect birds and their habitats. Your donation helps NVBA fund outdoor education, citizen science initiatives, habitat conservation, and programs that encourage planting native species and protecting wildlife. Birdathon also plays a crucial role in ornithological research by contributing valuable migration data to eBird, a global database run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
