Bikes for Tampa
Thousands of people in Tampa live on the streets, Tens of thousands lack access to reliable transportation.
Shockingly, Covid-19 has impacted this situation in two ways:
(1) A GLOBAL disruption in bike and bike part production, and
(2) Thousands of people who depend on public transportation are stranded looking for a safer alternative.
This has left WellBuilt Bikes in a very difficult situation and we'd love your help!
WellBuilt Bikes is a non-profit bike shop that sells refurbished bikes at affordable prices and invests the sales revenue into their Earn-A-Bike program, gifting those with little to no money a bike of their own. But after Covid, there are literally no affordable bikes on the market, and it's next to impossible to get even basic bicycle parts.
WellBuilt is trying to collect as many new and used bikes as possible & raise money to cover labor costs, cover the sky-rocketing cost of the rare parts still in inventory, and create a fund to buy parts as soon as they become available again.
Lack of transportation is a formidable barrier to gainful employment and car ownership is financially difficult and often completely inaccessible to impoverished or homeless community members. In fact, residents in the University Area ranked transportation as their top challenge to employment and education. Bicycle ownership is a tool that serves as a bridge to independence, employment, community-involvement, and physical health for those who do not have the option to own a vehicle. By addressing this issue folks are able to meet many of their own, more basic needs
We are doing all we can to make sure everyone in Tampa, regardless of income, is able to gain ownership of a bike and have the benefits of access, exercise, community, and everything else that comes from cycling.
